All sports require different things. Some require good hand-eye coordination, while others are focused more on arm and leg muscle. Dance is one of those sports that requires good balance, lots of strength and muscle, and many hours of practice. Dancers who are on a competitive dance team can spend more than twenty hours practicing over just a Friday-Sunday weekend when there is a competition coming. Dancers have to put just as much time and effort into their sport that other athletes do.
So what is an athlete? What is a dancer? What is the definition of sport?
An athlete is a person who is good in sports and/or other forms of physical exercise. This means that anyone from a volleyball player to a soccer player, and a football player to a dancer is and should be considered an athlete.
Dance is a wide range of things, but generally in the sense that I am speaking, it is a series of movements that match the speed and rhythm of a piece of music. Dance is a way of expressing yourself. Where some people express themselves by talking, others like to express their thoughts and feelings in a new and different way.
When someone says the word sport, whats the first thing you think of? Many would say football or basketball or baseball, few would say the Olympics or golf, but only a couple would say dance. Why is this? I mean, the definition of sport is right there. A sport is an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team, competes against another or others for entertainment. Dance competition is a lot like gymnastic competition; you have judges that pick the winners and score the contestants. Because of this, many people consider dance to not be a sport. But if gymnastics is a sport and it is judged like that, should dance not too be considered a sport?
